No. A “925” stamp on its own is not the same as a full UK hallmark. It indicates a claimed silver fineness of 925 parts per thousand. A recognised hallmark provides additional information and is applied through an assay office process.
When buying online, separate three questions: what metal the seller describes, which marks the actual item carries, and whether hallmarking is required for that article. Neither a silver colour nor a gemstone certificate answers all three.

What does a full UK hallmark contain?
The government's hallmarking guidance identifies three compulsory components: a sponsor's mark, a millesimal fineness mark and an assay office mark. A date letter may appear but is optional. Recognised Convention marks and lawful exemptions also need to be considered when assessing an item.
A photograph showing just the digits 925 therefore does not establish that the complete UK hallmark is present. Ask for a clear image of all marks rather than trying to infer them from an indistinct product photograph.
Why a small silver item may not have a full hallmark
UK guidance gives a silver exemption for articles below 7.78 grams. Whether a particular article qualifies depends on the relevant rules; do not decide from a parcel's weight or assume that the weight of stones counts as silver.
An exempt item can still be sterling silver. The absence of a full hallmark is not, by itself, proof that a lightweight article is wrongly described. Equally, a 925 stamp alone is not independent confirmation of every claim about a piece.
Use a real listing as a starting point
The Moissanite Bezel-Set Chain Bracelet lists 925 sterling silver and comes in sterling silver, yellow gold-plated and rose gold-plated variants. Its current details do not provide the complete hallmark image or a metal weight establishing an exemption.
Before ordering, ask which marks the supplied variant carries and whether the item is hallmarked or exempt. The product photograph in this article shows the bracelet design; it is not a close-up examination of a hallmark.
Does gold plating change the base metal?
A coating and the metal underneath are different specifications. A gold-plated sterling silver bracelet is not described as solid gold merely because its surface is gold-coloured. Ask about both parts of the construction if the listing is unclear.
A practical online checklist
- Obtain the base metal and finish for the exact variant.
- Ask for the full set of marks, or an explanation of the applicable exemption.
- Keep the listing and order description with your purchase record.
- Direct unresolved hallmark questions to a recognised assay office.
Our GRA certificate guide covers the separate question of stone paperwork. A card about moissanite does not establish a metal hallmark, and a hallmark does not grade a gemstone.
